Spring is Here!

slice of life

Spring is here.

This really stinks.

Snow is everywhere.

Rita’s is free

and on the way home

but no one really cares.

The sky is grey

The roads are mush.

There’s a blustery chill in the air.

This slice is wimpy.

The poetry’s bad.

This weather is SO NOT FAIR!!!

( I take full responsibility for this atrocious poetry.)

………

It’s been a dismal day, and if we’re honest, we are both feeling a little Slice of Life fatigue to match our SO SICK of WINTER fatigue.

It’s good to remember when working on a long term project with students, that they need a break once in a while. A break to write something different, something silly, or even the freedom to write nothing at all for the day (WHAT? Scandalous!) Take a day to do a gallery walk of writer’s notebooks, read some mentor texts, or do some small group sharing. Writing is hard work, and it’s okay to suspend production for a day to refresh and get the creative juices flowing again. And who knows what kind of wonderful (or truly terrible) poetry will be the result?

For all of the day’s Slice of Life Stories, head over to Two Writing Teachers.

  1. Yep, the snow made it pretty hard to celebrate the first day of spring. Your points about taking a break and acknowledging the hard work that writing is is so important. Great post! I wasn’t sure where you were going with the poem, but I really LOVE the connection. I think you could revisit the free Rita’s and write a VERY funny post or poem. Who wants free Italian ice or ice cream or whatever is is when it’s freezing and snowing???

And it wasn’t bad. Even if I love winter.
